Die Pflanzengattung Strelitzia gehört zur Familie der Strelitziengewächse. Strelitzia Nicolai, auch Baum-Strelitzie genannt, gehört zu den baumartigen Strelitzien. Ihre Blätter sind groß und von einem satten Grün. Die wunderschöne Pflanze ist in Südafrika beheimatet, aber auch auf den Kanarischen Inseln, Madeira und den Azoren ist sie heute häufig in der freien Natur zu finden. Sie ist eng verwandt mit der Strelitzia Reginae, welche auch Paradiesvogel- oder Papageienblume genannt wird. Je nach Standort und Alter kann auch Strelitzia Nicolai hierzulande als Zimmerpflanze blühen. Die Blüten bestehen aus einem großen, kahnförmigen Hochblatt, sowie meist drei weißen Kelch- und drei blauen Kronblättern.
