The Chinese date originates, as its name suggests, from China, but has been found in the Mediterranean region for over 2000 years. It is easy to care for, robust and insensitive to diseases. The fruits can be harvested green from the end of September and later turn a reddish brown when they are fully ripe. Their sweet taste and floury consistency are reminiscent of dates. The variety Dongzao is self-fruiting, but yields are higher when another variety is nearby. The tasty fruits are best for snacking directly from the tree, but can also be dried or canned and are sometimes even used in Chinese medicine.
