Kurkuma wird auch Gelbwurz oder indischer Safran genannt und stammt aus Indien bzw. aus Südostasien. Dort wird sie seit 5.000 Jahren als heilige Pflanze verehrt. In Europa wurde sie zunächst als Küchenkraut bekannt bis man sich auch hier mit der medizinischen Heilwirkung des Kurkumas beschäftigte. Die Kurkuma Pflanze gehört zur Familie der Ingwergewächse, ihre Blätter sind hellgrün und erinnern an Schilf. Das bekannte Gewürz bzw. Heilmittel wird aus dem Wurzelstock gewonnen. Ihre Blütezeit beginnt im August, dann entfaltet sie ihre prachtvollen und farbenfrohen Blüten.
